What is Phlebology and what is a Phlebologist?
Phlebology is the medical specialty which is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the venous system. A phlebologist is a specialist who has trained specifically to diagnose and treat all aspects of venous disorders.

What are varicose veins and what symptoms do they cause?
Varicose veins are dilated, tortuous veins with refluxing (reverse flowing) blood which travels toward the lower legs rather than the heart. These veins no longer function normally and are a liability to healthy legs. Typically symptoms are aching, burning, throbbing, heaviness, swelling and itching.

What causes varicose veins to develop?
Varicosities generally are caused either by failing valves or dilation of vein walls. Heredity (family history) is the foremost reason for varicose veins. Other factors include multiple pregnancies, occupations requiring prolonged standing, obesity, and traumatic leg injuries.

Are there any new methods for treating varicose veins besides stripping or wearing compression stockings?
New methods involve ablation of varicose veins without stripping. These include radiofrequency or laser ablation of varicosities and ultrasound guided sclerotherapy. All can be performed on a fully ambulatory basis with immediate return to activity.,,,

perforating veinWhich veins take over after my varicose veins have been treated?
There is no takeover. The deep veins have already taken over for the failed, malfunctioning varicose veins. When varicose veins are closed or removed, the workload on the deep venous system returning blood to the heart is eased.

What are spider veins?
Spider veins are superficial purplish-blue or reddish threadlike veins which occur on the face, trunk and legs and usually are associated with larger reticular veins which often connect with snider veins. These veins serve no function and sometimes cause symptoms such as stinging pain. Spider veins (seen most frequently in women) are often induced by hormonal changes.

How are spider veins treated?
Spider and reticular veins can be treated with sclerotherapy (injections using tiny needles) or laser therapy. Generally the majority of spider veins and reticular veins are best treated with sclerotherapy while laser therapy is used more selectively. Both are very effective when judiciously employed.                                         Back to Top

If I do not want to start treatment for my spider or varicose veins at this time, what are my options?
If you are willing to wear appropriately fitted compression stockings regularly, your symptoms will significantly improve and the progress of your vein disease will significantly slow down. However, the unwanted veins will not go away.

What are the risks of having untreated advanced varicose veins?
Potential risks are: a) superficial blood clots (phlebitis) within the varicose veins b) bleeding from varicosities especially from the lowermost legs, or c) ulcers, open wounds, generally in the vicinity of the ankles.

If I decide to have my varicose veins evaluated and treated, what is the best way to get started?
Obtaining a referral from your primary care physician or internist will begin the process. Your evaluation will include a medical history, physical exam, ultrasound mapping and discussion affording YOU treatment options.
